The document presents findings from a survey conducted by the Portuguese Observatory on Cultural Activities (OPAC) between April and June 2020, focusing on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on National Monuments (NM). A total of 152 NMs participated in the survey, providing insights into the activities and measures taken following the closure to the public. The analysis highlighted a strong reliance on online services, extensive use of social networks like Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube, development of digital content, and offline activities such as heritage and collections maintenance. Staff adaptation to the new scenario was also emphasised.
Regarding future measures, the document outlines preparations for the resumption of face-to-face activities, reinforcement of online services post-reopening, implementation of security measures for staff and visitors, technological training for NM staff, and a shift towards more audience-oriented services, especially educational ones. Additionally, there is a call for increased public policies and support from the tourism and cultural sectors to offset the loss of visitors and revenues.
The study underscores the importance of NMs in promoting online services and the need for continued impact studies in the face of a prolonged crisis. The OPAC plans to further assess the impacts of COVID-19 on cultural heritage in upcoming studies. The research team acknowledges the collaboration of NM directors, managers, and technicians despite the challenging circumstances. Overall, the document provides valuable insights into the responses of NMs in Portugal to the challenges posed by the pandemic and outlines key measures to adapt to the new situation.
