Portugal National Report: UNESCO Man & the Biosphere Programme (2021)

The year 2021 marked the 10th anniversary of the Berlengas Biosphere Reserve, prompting the compilation of a comprehensive 10-year Periodic Review Report. This report serves as a reflection on the past decade’s successes and failures, outlining a strategic 10-year plan for the Biosphere Reserve’s future. Stakeholders from the local population, authorities, and academia were actively engaged in providing feedback, which was incorporated into the report and future plans.

In terms of conservation efforts, a key priority for 2021 was the eradication of the invasive hottentot fig plant, although some patches were retained for structural reasons. Additionally, initiatives were undertaken to protect native species, combat invasive species, and raise awareness among local fishers about environmentally friendly practices.

Communication and dissemination actions played a crucial role in engaging the community and promoting awareness about the Biosphere Reserve. Public sessions were organised to gather input from the general population and stakeholders, contributing valuable insights for evaluation and future programming. The “Month of the Sea” program in Peniche aimed to enhance ocean awareness through various activities like lectures, workshops, and exhibitions.

Furthermore, the Santana Madeira Biosphere Reserve undertook a participatory approach in preparing its Periodic Review Report, involving bilateral contacts with key entities and public consultations. Governance actions included meetings to discuss proposals for the next decade, emphasising the interconnectedness of human activities with socio-economic development.

Overall, 2021 showcased significant progress in conservation, community engagement, and sustainable development across various Biosphere Reserves in Portugal.
