This report presents a characterisation of the museums in the Portuguese Museums Network based on the data collected by the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage through a questionnaire given to all the museums. Its main objective was to collect information to be included in the museum records of the Register of Ibero-American Museums.
The data in this report relates to 2017 and is based on the questionnaire applied to museums in 2018 to update the information in the Register of Ibero-American Museums. Consequently, the universe considered in this report is the 146 museums that answered the questionnaire out of a total of 149 that were part of the Portuguese Museums Network in 2017.
The data presented in the report serves as a foundation for understanding the current state of museums in Portugal. It reveals that the teams in Portuguese museums are multifunctional, with employees often performing multiple roles within the institution. The document also provides insights into the management and human resources of the museums, indicating that in 2017, there were 2,465 remunerated individuals working in the 146 museums considered. It further delves into the use of management documents and the inventory and documentation of collections, shedding light on the types of support used for inventory and the percentage of items inventoried in both paper and digital formats.
Overall, the report offers valuable insights into the state of museums in Portugal, their management practices, and the utilisation of resources, contributing to a deeper understanding of the museum landscape in the country
