Heritage in Action 2022: South East Europe Special

Discover the rich heritage of Europe and its significance with Europa Nostra’s annual magazine, Heritage in Action. The 2022 edition focuses on the heritage field in South East Europe.

Many sites and monuments in this region are under threat of uncontrolled development, bad decisions, lack of regulations, and even corruption. Thousands of professionals and volunteers work tirelessly to safeguard heritage with very little official support. This edition gathers many surprising stories of dedication and perseverance under difficult circumstances. It allows readers to travel from prehistoric times to the modern era, from small wooden churches to large factories, and from enchanting lakes to forgotten villages.

Through a wide variety of topics, Heritage in Action 2022 highlights the important role that cultural heritage can play in addressing some of the most pressing issues of our time such as climate change and digitisation. Through case studies, expert analysis, and practical recommendations, the report illustrates how cultural heritage can be leveraged as a powerful tool for building more resilient and sustainable communities.

Heritage in Action 2022 includes articles on many endangered heritage sites, including Rosia Montana in Romania, the Belgrade Fortress in Serbia, and the world heritage site of Lake Ohrid (Ochrid) in North Macedonia and Albania. Success stories such as those of the European Heritage Award winners are also highlighted. This edition also features interviews with Father Sava Janjić, abbot of the Decani Monastery in Kosovo, and Sneška Quaedvlieg-Mihailović, Secretary General of Europa Nostra.

A special piece is dedicated to the late Costa Carras, founder of ELLINIKI ETAIRIA – Society for the Environment and Cultural Heritage (ELLET) and a long-standing Vice-President of Europa Nostra. A pioneer in environmentalism and defender of citizens’ engagement, Costa Carras devoted his life to the cause of conservation of cultural and natural heritage and landscape in his native country Greece and elsewhere in Europe.
