This study focuses on the degradation of AV limestone, a dark-coloured limestone commonly used in construction applications. The research highlights the impact of environmental conditions, such as high temperatures and humidity, on the structural integrity of AV limestone when used in exterior settings.
The presence of expansive clay minerals and irregular fractures in the rock’s facade are identified as key factors contributing to the degradation and loss of mechanical performance of AV limestone. Experimental results, including macroscopic analysis, clay content evaluation, and X-Ray mineral diffraction analysis, provide insights into the degradation process of AV limestone.
The study emphasises the importance of systematic characterization and proper stone selection procedures to prevent degradation and ensure the long-term stability of natural stone materials in construction. The research findings suggest that AV limestone may be more suitable for interior applications due to its limitations in external environments prone to aggressive conditions. The study also proposes a standardised methodology for assessing the mineralogical composition and structural characteristics of carbonate rocks like AV limestone before their application in construction projects.
Overall, the study underscores the significance of complementary testing methodologies and environmental assessments in guiding the selection and application of natural stone materials. By understanding the degradation mechanisms and vulnerabilities of AV limestone, this research aims to contribute to the development of guidelines for preserving the aesthetic, functional, and structural properties of natural stone in building facades and other construction applications.
