European Parliament resolution on the role of culture, education, media and sport in the fight against racism

Culture, education, media, and sport are crucial in fighting systemic racism and promote a more inclusive society in Europe. The European Parliament resolution of 8 March 2022 (2021/2057(INI)) highlights that European societies are home to increasing cultural diversity and a growing share of foreign-born populations and their descendants, however on the other hand racism systematically exists in all areas of our daily life and can take many forms.

The text calls on the Commission and the Member States and offers recommendations to recognize and counteract the systemic racism, such as: encouraging people from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds to take part in cultural events, tackling barriers to the participation of minorities in culture, advocateing for the recognition and promotion of the arts and culture of racialised and ethnic groups, notably by using funding from all the relevant programmes to eliminate such barriers. Moreover, it discusses the role of education in promoting citizenship, tolerance, and non-discrimination.

The European Parliament acknowledges that culture, education, media, and sport are fundamental to foster a society that is open and welcoming to all, and that recognises the valuable contribution made by diverse communities to Europe’s cultural and linguistic diversity. Overall, this text provides insights into the EU’s efforts to promote diversity, combat racism, and preserve the rich cultural tapestry of European heritage.
