This report is part of a study that produces up-to-date and reliable information on audiences for DGPC museums, including social profiles and cultural practices, the relationship with museums, expectations, evaluations and suggestions arising from the visit. It aims to promote knowledge and the search for new responses to the challenges that audiences are posing to many museum institutions as a result of the strong impact of tourism.
This is a pioneering study in Portugal from several points of view: the number of participating museums, the comparative perspective adopted and the duration of the observation (12 months). This particular document pertains to the Grão Vasco National Museum. The study involved 569 valid responses, with 39% from foreigners, representing 45% of the sample.
The study aimed to bridge research with cultural policy implementation and museum management, reflecting the partnership between DGPC/CIES-IUL. Visitors were informed about the study’s objectives and context during their museum visit, ensuring transparency and understanding. The document also highlights the importance of visitor feedback, with suggestions for improvement ranging from more informative texts to enhanced visitor comfort in exhibition rooms.
Overall, the study provides valuable insights into visitor demographics, behaviours, and perceptions at MNGV. It emphasises the significance of engaging visitors beyond their museum visit and the potential for using visitor feedback to enhance the museum experience. The document concludes by summarising the main findings of the study, focusing on the MNGV specifically and comparing them with the overall results of the study.
