Estudo de Públicos de Museus Nacionais – Públicos do Museu Nacional do Teatro e da Dança

This report is part of a study that produces up-to-date and reliable information on audiences for DGPC museums, including social profiles and cultural practices, the relationship with museums, expectations, evaluations and suggestions arising from the visit. It aims to promote knowledge and the search for new responses to the challenges that audiences are posing to many museum institutions as a result of the strong impact of tourism.

This is a pioneering study in Portugal from several points of view: the number of participating museums, the comparative perspective adopted and the duration of the observation (12 months). The methodology included analysing visitor statistics, demographics, activities, and conducting public surveys.

This particular document pertains to the Museu Nacional do Teatro e da Dança (MNTD). The MNTD utilises physical and digital platforms for information dissemination. It was noted that Portuguese visitors at MNTD tend to be slightly older compared to foreigners, with a majority having higher education levels. Different nationalities show varying representation in visitor types, with a high percentage of national visitors at MNTD compared to other museums. Visitors engage in educational activities and virtual tours at MNTD.

Suggestions for improvement include enhancing exhibition circuits. The qualitative analysis of visitor opinions and suggestions was conducted through a comprehensive coding process, focusing on themes like support texts and contextualization of historical aspects related to the exhibits. The study followed a structured approach for data preparation, immersion, coding, categorization, and interpretation based on Leavy’s five-phase proposal.
