Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. Paris, 17 October 2003

The Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, adopted by UNESCO in 2003, aims to protect and promote the diverse cultural practices, expressions, knowledge, and skills that communities recognize as part of their cultural heritage. It highlights the significance of intangible cultural heritage for cultural diversity and sustainable development. The Convention establishes measures for safeguarding, including documentation, research, and education, and emphasizes the importance of community involvement. It also creates mechanisms for international cooperation and assistance, including a Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and a list of heritage in need of urgent safeguarding. The Convention calls for the participation of States Parties and establishes an Intergovernmental Committee to oversee its implementation.
