7 Most Endangered Heritage Sites 2024

The video announces the seven most endangered heritage sites in Europe for 2024, selected for the 7 Most Endangered programme. This year’s list comprises two heritage sites in the Hatay province in Türkiye that were heavily damaged by the devastating earthquake of 6 February 2023, which caused severe human and heritage losses in the wider region, as well as a religious building in Siena in Italy that suffered structural damage as the result of an earthquake that occurred in the same month.

Selection criteria included heritage significance, cultural value, and the serious dangers the sites face. The engagement of local communities and the commitment of stakeholders were also crucial. Additionally, the potential of these sites to spur sustainable socio-economic development was considered.

Each selected site is eligible for an EIB Heritage Grant of €10,000 to support early preservation activities. Teams of experts from Europa Nostra and the European Investment Bank Institute will now assess the sites and provide recommendations for action.

This video is relevant to heritage conservationists, cultural historians, policymakers, and community activists. It is also important for stakeholders in the selected regions and the general public interested in European cultural heritage and sustainable development.
