NEMO is thrilled to announce two travel grant opportunities to the NEMO European Museum Conference “Can we talk? Museums facing polarisation”. Five young museum professionals and five museum professionals located in South and Central-Eastern Europe will be awarded a travel grant and free participation at the conference. Deadline to apply: 9 September 2024.
NEMO publishes two calls for participation, one addressing young museum professionals in Europe, and the other tailored to museum professionals located in South and Central-Eastern Europe, to encourage their participation at NEMO’s next European Museum Conference. Successful applicants will get to join from 10-12 November 2024 in Sibiu, Romania, to discuss the power museums have to face polarisation and political pressure and how to build strong relationships with underrepresented groups and foster their representation.
1. Call for participation of young museum professionals
NEMO offers 5 travel and conference grants (500 Euro lump sum travel support, including a free conference ticket) for young museum professionals interested and active in the topic of cultural democracy, cultural politics and community involvement with a strong commitment to European collaboration and international networking. Applications will be considered from persons up to 30 years old who are located in one of the members states of the Council of Europe.
Selected grant holders are expected to actively participate by delivering an intervention at the conference. This can be an artistic intervention (a poem, a song, dance, a game…) but could also be a spontaneous contribution to one of the panels. Surprise us and let us know how you envisage the intervention! 2. Call for participation of museum professionals from South and Central-Eastern Europe
NEMO offers 5 travel and conference grants (500 Euro lump sum travel support, including a free conference ticket) for museum professionals from South and Central-Eastern Europe (please consult EuroVoc) interested and active in the topic of cultural democracy, cultural/museum politics and community involvement with a strong commitment to European collaboration and international networking.
Selected grant holders are expected to write an article about the conference panel topics from your (museum’s or region’s) perspective building up to the conference. The article has to be delivered 2 weeks after selection of candidates (early October) and will be published on NEMO’s website in the weeks leading up to the conference. The article should be written in English and should not exceed 1 page.
You may choose one or several of the four panel topics that are included in the programme:
- We need to talk!
This introductory panel will focus on the impact cultural organisations have on polarising tendencies in today’s societies and vice versa. - Can we talk?
This session focuses on relationship issues museums (might) have: How to counteract polarisation by building strong relationships with underrepresented groups? - Should we talk?
This session explores the museum as trusted institutions and their societal role in polarising times. Should they provide consistent (neutral) places or should they take a stand? - Are we allowed to talk?
This session will address the experience museums might have with growing political influence and censorship in their institutions. How do museums react to political influence, which strategies can cultural institutions such as museums use to deal with, or even counteract, political interference?
