This publication introduces interpretation and its evolution, insights into EU training approaches, and criteria for assessing best practice in heritage interpretation, alongside case studies. The Handbook of Good Practice in Heritage Interpretation in the European context offers an innovative approach to interpreter training and career development. It also delves into the future of the sector, which is experiencing growth thanks to increased global awareness of the importance of engagement with heritage.
Developed under the scope of the TEHIC project, “Towards a European Heritage Interpretation Curriculum”, co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union, this guide covers the following chapters: “1. TEHIC, a project for training in Heritage Interpretation in Europe,” “2. A summary of the concept of heritage interpretation and its evolution,” “3. Overview of heritage interpretation in Europe and future prospects,” “4. Mapping the profession of heritage interpreter,” “5. Heritage interpretation and university education,” and “6. Criteria for selecting best practices in heritage interpretation.”
In addition, the handbook presents 14 exemplary best practice cases of heritage interpretation from the consortium countries (Sweden, Spain, Croatia, Portugal, and Germany), providing practical examples corresponding to the theoretical chapters. This handbook provides new avenues for research on the training and profession of heritage interpreters in Europe. It also serves as a good example of shared knowledge and applied research, filling a crucial gap as there have been no previous studies on this topic at the European level.
This contribution was produced with the hope that it will be useful to those willing to work to safeguard cultural and natural heritage, by creating emotional and intellectual connections between people and heritage, and by fostering a critical spirit to rethink heritage today in the midst of the social challenges we face.
