Food Vision 2030 A World Leader in Sustainable Food Systems

As the global community increasingly prioritizes sustainable agriculture, it is crucial that agri-food sectors adopt environmentally responsible practices. The attached policy paper outlines a Strategic Vision for the agri-food sector in Ireland, providing a comprehensive approach to tackling environmental challenges while supporting economic and social sustainability.

The policy paper emphasizes the importance of balancing economic growth, environmental protection, and social justice, aiming to create a Climate Smart, Environmentally Sustainable Agri-Food Sector. It envisions a future where primary producers have enhanced well-being, with a viable and resilient food sector that produces safe, nutritious, and appealing food, both domestically and internationally.

The document proposes policies to tackle emissions, water quality, and biodiversity, including increased use of on-farm renewable energy sources. It also highlights the crucial role of primary producers, setting goals and actions aimed at increasing their economic and social viability, and supporting sustainable farming practices.

To further diversify Ireland’s agri-food output, the policy paper advocates for more organic production, nature-based production systems, and policies to reduce food waste. While encouraging healthier dietary habits with more fruits and vegetables, the policy foresees that grass-based livestock production will remain the core of Ireland’s output.

This document demonstrates a renewed dialogue involving various stakeholders of the Irish Agri-food sector, including the Environmental Pillar. It allows for an agreed vision of the future, consolidating a balance between economic, environmental, and social dimensions of sustainability. Heritage professionals and enthusiasts working in the agri-food sector can gain insights from the strategic policies, highlighting that being environmentally responsible and economically sustainable are not mutually exclusive.
