National Policy on Architecture Resources

Our architectural heritage speaks to the value of design, quality materials, and practical skills that have been passed down through generations. As we navigate the challenges of climate change and ecological pressures, it is essential that we think innovatively about the ways in which we engage with, reuse, and develop our surroundings. Against this backdrop, the National Policy on Architecture for Ireland has been developed, outlining how the government will coordinate built and natural environment action while delivering on the objectives outlined in Housing for All, the National Development Plan, and the Climate Action Plan.

The National Policy on Architecture highlights the importance of embedding quality architecture within the built environment for increased environmental, economic, and social sustainability and resilience. The policy’s vision emphasizes the significant role architecture and design play in supporting a more resilient and sustainable society through knowledge, creativity, inclusive participation, and leadership. Underpinned by four objectives of sustainability, quality, leadership, and culture, the policy seeks to prioritize environmentally sensitive buildings and spaces that align with sustainable development goals.

In the context of the European Green Deal, funding mechanisms and policy direction are in line with the policy, including initiatives such as the Renovation Wave, Just Transition, and the New European Bauhaus. The policy demonstrates a commitment to achieving sustainable and resilient heritage as a cultural resource. The policy supports and promotes quality in architecture, built heritage, and the environment, achieving the sustainable development goals for a better future.
