The article, published in the journal Conservar Património, discusses the implementation of a risk management model in archives, focusing on the case study of the Portuguese National Archive Torre do Tombo. It highlights the innovative project initiated in 2006 to assess environmental and biological risks at Torre do Tombo.
After a first phase in 2006-2007, related to the assessment of environmental and biological risks, the second phase of the project, which began in 2009, aimed at gaining a comprehensive understanding of all risks related to the deterioration of documentation.
The management model established for the archive serves as a benchmark for institutions responsible for preserving archival heritage with historical and cultural significance. By integrating risk assessment models into decision-making processes, the article emphasises the optimization of institutional functioning, as well as a holistic comprehension of preservation levels within organisations. The study conducted at the Portuguese National Archive Torre do Tombo resulted in detailed insights into conservation practices and corrective measures to enhance functional efficiency.
As a result, the study serves as a significant contribution to the field of archival conservation and offers practical guidance for institutions seeking to optimise their preservation efforts and ensure the long-term safeguarding of valuable heritage materials.
