In 2017 Guimarães became the most sustainable city in Portugal, with an innovative and bold urban development model combining the cultural heritage with best environmental practices and public participation. In the framework of the Action Plan sustainability measures have been defined, the implementation of which will allow compliance with the commitment made with the signature of the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy – the reduction of, at least, 40% of the municipality’s emissions by 2030 and the adoption of a joint approach on mitigation and adaptation to climate change.
The document outlines the city’s pivotal role in Portuguese history, shedding light on its architectural innovation and designation as the European Capital of Culture and European City of Sport, showcasing enduring legacy and cultural vibrancy. Furthermore, the Action Plan underscores the city’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable development, exemplified through the restoration of public spaces and the promotion of architectural quality and heritage.
Through the plan the city aims to achieve substantial reductions in energy consumption and emissions, surpassing national targets. It outlines strategies for energy efficiency, sustainable urban mobility, and the enhancement of public and private initiatives to reduce energy and carbon intensity. It reflects the municipality’s dedication to fostering energy sustainability and engaging the population in impactful environmental initiatives. The plan also serves as an exploration of the European heritage site’s significance, cultural prominence, and ongoing efforts towards sustainable development. It offers a resource for professionals and enthusiasts seeking to gain a comprehensive understanding of the site’s rich heritage and its enduring commitment to preservation and sustainability.
